Immaculate Conception
This print from the early 17th century highlights an important theological aspect of the Roman Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception, which was promulgated two centuries later.
According to Catholic teaching Mary was conceived without the stain of original sin. However, in order for that to happen she was still dependant upon the salvation through her Son’s death on the Cross. That is what this print attempts to one’s attention by depicting Mary inside a cross.
